Can you skim over artex?

Can you skim over Artex? A suitable approach can only be decided after the coating and background have been assessed, including whether an older textured coating may contain asbestos.

Updated 15 October 2026 · Cork Plastering Services

Identify the coating before changing it

Artex is often used casually to describe a textured ceiling, but an appearance or trade name does not establish the composition of a particular coating. Tell the contractor what is known about the property and any previous ceiling work. Keep relevant survey or testing records available. The aim is to establish what needs checking before a finishing method is proposed, rather than deciding that every patterned ceiling should receive the same treatment.

Why the asbestos question comes first

The Health and Safety Authority identifies textured coatings among materials that may contain asbestos. You cannot establish that from this website or a photograph. Where the material is uncertain, seek competent assessment before disturbing it. Do not scrape, sand or drill a suspected coating to prepare it for a quote. This guide does not provide a sampling or removal method and does not imply that an ordinary plastering enquiry includes asbestos work.

What information should you gather?

Record which rooms have the finish, whether it appears damaged and whether any reliable records exist. Take photographs from a safe position without disturbing the surface. Mention changes around light fittings or other work planned on the ceiling. If you have a survey, share the relevant findings with the person assessing the job through an agreed channel. Avoid using a remembered installation date as proof of what the material contains.

Discuss the finish after the assessment

Once the coating and background have been properly considered, ask the contractor to explain the proposed scope and why it is appropriate. The quotation should distinguish any specialist assessment or work from the plastering finish. Ask where responsibility for each stage sits and what information needs to be available before work starts. Do not assume that covering a surface removes every consideration for later repairs or alterations.

Coordinate with other trades

A ceiling project may also involve lighting, access openings or changes to wiring. Explain those plans at the start so the sequence can be considered together. Ask who will deal with fittings and who needs the assessment information. Keep the agreed approach with the job records for future reference. A smooth final appearance is only part of the project; the written scope should make clear what work has actually been done underneath.

How to enquire in Cork

Use the callback form to describe the ceiling as a textured coating if that is all you know. State your nearest town and mention any survey information, damage or planned alterations during the call. Do not send samples or start preparation just to speed up the quote. We can discuss the plastering enquiry and what further assessment is needed, without claiming a specialist certification or promising a method before the material is understood.

Frequently asked questions

Can you give a firm answer from a photograph?

Photographs help explain the enquiry, but the wall or ceiling may need an on-site assessment before preparation, materials and the programme are agreed.

Should I buy materials before the callback?
