Can you plaster over paint?

Can you plaster over paint? Sometimes, but the paint and the surface underneath must be assessed before the preparation and plaster system are chosen.

The existing surface matters

A painted wall can hide several different backgrounds. The colour tells you little about the material underneath or how firmly earlier layers are attached. Before asking for a skim, describe the room, previous work and any visible peeling or damage. The purpose of the first conversation is to arrange an assessment of the job, not to select a product from a photograph. Give the contractor enough context to distinguish a straightforward finish from work that may need more preparation.

What does the manufacturer say?

British Gypsum says plastering onto an existing painted wall is possible only where both the paint and its substrate are in very good condition, with the specified preparation. That advice is conditional: it is not permission to skim every painted surface. Ask the contractor to identify the background and proposed products, and to explain how their preparation follows the relevant instructions. Do not substitute an internet recipe for the specification on the actual job.

Describe problems before comparing prices

Point out loose paint, staining, previous patches and areas where a finish has been removed. Tell the contractor if wallpaper has recently come off or other trades have cut into the wall. A quote prepared without that information may describe a different job from the one eventually uncovered. Keep photographs from before preparation starts so you have a clear record of what was visible when the scope was agreed.

Ask what preparation includes

The word preparation can cover different tasks, so ask for it to be explained. Which surfaces are retained? What is removed? Are local repairs included before the final finish? Who deals with fixtures and cleanup? These are scope questions rather than instructions to carry out the work yourself. If you want to do some room preparation, agree exactly what is suitable before stripping, scraping or applying anything to the surface.

Agree how unexpected work is handled

Sometimes a background cannot be fully understood until part of the existing finish is exposed. Ask how the contractor will explain additional findings and price a changed scope. Keep approval of extra work in writing. A low initial figure is not necessarily a fair comparison if it assumes preparation that another quote already includes. Compare the proposed sequence as well as the total and ask about the finish at adjoining untreated surfaces.

Make the callback useful

For a Cork enquiry, leave the area and select Interior Plastering or Skimming and Repairs. Have a list of rooms, rough dimensions and a short description of the current finish ready. Mention any dates already agreed with a decorator. Ask what should stay untouched until the assessment. You can then discuss the proposed scope without feeling you need to identify every coating or prescribe a bonding product yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can you give a firm answer from a photograph?

Photographs help explain the enquiry, but the wall or ceiling may need an on-site assessment before preparation, materials and the programme are agreed.

Should I buy materials before the callback?

Ask first. Keep the product choices with the proposed scope so preparation and finishing materials are considered together.
