How long does plaster take to dry?

How long does plaster take to dry? There is no reliable single answer for every room: the product, background, thickness and conditions need to be considered before decoration is booked.

Ask about drying before you book the painter

A plastering appointment and a decorating appointment are separate stages. Ask what material is proposed, which surfaces will be treated and whether repairs or base coats are included. Those details make the drying conversation more useful than asking only how many days a room takes. If you are planning a Cork renovation around a move-in date, explain that date early. Let the plasterer and decorator agree what needs checking rather than fitting the finish into an assumed gap in the calendar.

What should the handover tell you?

Request the product names and aftercare instructions for the work actually completed. A room may contain new plasterboard, retained plaster and deeper repaired areas, so describe the whole scope when asking about decoration. Keep the instructions with the quotation. If the finish needs a later inspection before painting, establish who will do that and how you should arrange it. Do not treat a photograph on a phone as confirmation that every part of a wall is ready.

Plan around the room you have

Tell the contractor whether the property is occupied, whether windows can be opened and what access remains available. Ask for guidance appropriate to the room rather than following a generic online schedule. This is particularly useful where a bathroom, stairwell or adjoining room must stay in use. Explain any restrictions before the work starts so you can agree a practical arrangement for ventilation, protection and access to the finished surfaces.

Avoid turning a finish date into a promise

The date plastering ends is a useful planning point, but it is not automatically the date decoration can begin. When comparing quotations, ask whether the programme describes application only or includes follow-up and handover. Make room for advice about the actual finish. If another trade has a fixed appointment, tell everyone involved. It is better to clarify the dependency before booking than to assume a finish is ready because the next contractor has arrived.

Keep preparation and aftercare separate

Instructions for applying plaster are not necessarily instructions for decorating it. Ask the decorator to check the chosen paint system as well as the background. Avoid buying primer or paint purely because it was recommended for a different job. Gyproc's product information can help identify the intended use of its finishing plaster; the project still needs advice for the product and conditions on your wall. We do not publish a universal drying period or dilution recipe.

What should you say when requesting a callback?

Give the room type, the surfaces involved and whether the job is a skim, repair or new lining if you know. You do not need to diagnose the materials yourself. Mention your town, any decorating deadline and whether the property is occupied. Keep photographs showing the whole room ready for the conversation. Ask for the proposed finishing sequence and what you should do after the plasterer leaves, then record those arrangements with the written scope.

Frequently asked questions

Can you give a firm answer from a photograph?

Photographs help explain the enquiry, but the wall or ceiling may need an on-site assessment before preparation, materials and the programme are agreed.

Should I buy materials before the callback?

Ask first. Keep the product choices with the proposed scope so preparation and finishing materials are considered together.
