How to prepare walls for plastering?

How to prepare walls for plastering starts with agreeing the scope: clear the room as arranged, identify existing problems and leave surface treatments to the agreed specification.

Agree what preparation means

Before moving furniture or buying materials, ask which tasks the contractor expects you to handle. Clearing a room is different from preparing the wall itself. One quotation may include removal of an old finish while another assumes the surface is already suitable. Get that distinction written down so both sides understand the starting point. Do not apply a primer or bonding product because a general video describes it as a standard step.

Make the room and access practical

Discuss the route for materials, available working space and which rooms need to remain in use. Agree who moves large furniture and how floors and remaining contents will be protected. Mention shared entrances, stairs or access restrictions. For an occupied Cork home, these arrangements help you plan everyday use of the property while the work is carried out. Keep the agreed working hours and access details with the quote.

Point out the wall's history

Describe previous patches, water marks, peeling coatings and areas opened by other trades. Photographs of the whole room are often more useful for the initial conversation than an isolated close-up. If a wall has been covered by wallpaper or furniture for a long time, explain what is known and what is uncertain. The contractor can then decide what assessment is needed rather than relying on an assumed background.

Coordinate fittings and other trades

Ask who will deal with switches, sockets, radiators and other fittings. Any electrical or plumbing work should be arranged with the appropriate person; clearing the room does not mean removing services yourself. Tell the plasterer about planned alterations before the final finish is agreed. If another trade will return after plastering, clarify what protection or later making-good is expected and whether that work belongs in the quotation.

Leave product decisions with the specification

Different existing surfaces may require different preparation. British Gypsum's advice about painted walls is conditional on the paint and substrate being suitable, which shows why a universal treatment is not a safe assumption. Ask for the proposed product choices and preparation to be explained for your actual wall. If you have already bought a product, mention it before using it rather than assuming it is compatible with the planned work.

Use the handover to plan the next stage

Preparation does not end with making space for a plasterer. Ask what happens after the finish is applied, including cleanup and instructions for decoration. Keep the painter informed of the products and surfaces involved. Before booking, use the checklist below to confirm who handles each task. For a callback, have the room list, your nearest Cork town and any scheduling constraints ready so the conversation can focus on the scope rather than guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

Can you give a firm answer from a photograph?

Photographs help explain the enquiry, but the wall or ceiling may need an on-site assessment before preparation, materials and the programme are agreed.

Should I buy materials before the callback?

Ask first. Keep the product choices with the proposed scope so preparation and finishing materials are considered together.
